Territory is a western series that premiered on October 24, 2024 on Netflix. When a massive Australian cattle station lacks an heir, rival groups vie to seize control, threatening to tear the family apart.

In Territory, the Lawson family has owned Marianne Ranch for generations. With the family patriarch, Colin, aging out of competency, rivals competing to take over all or parts of his dynasty are coming out of the woodwork. But there's struggle within the family as well, as a wayward nephew reappears and takes a leadership position over some of his uncles and aunts.

Storyline[]

The story begins with the death of Daniel Lawson, heir to the Marianne Station cattle ranch, which sparks a fierce dispute over control of the property.

When the world’s largest cattle station is left without a clear successor, generational clashes threaten to tear the Lawson family apart. Sensing this once great dynasty is in decline, the outback’s most powerful factions – rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, Indigenous elders and billionaire miners – move in for the kill. The episodes focus on the internal tensions of the Lawson family, a clan marked by internal divisions.

"When the largest cattle ranch in the world is left without a clear leader, intergenerational conflicts threaten to tear the Lawson family apart. Sensing that this great dynasty is in decline, the region's most powerful factions, which include rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, indigenous elders and billionaire miners, prepare to seize control."

In an interview with GQ Australia, actor Sam Corlett shared his experience working on the series "Territory". He highlighted the immediate immersion of writer Timothy Lee in the project, revealing that discussions about personal experiences and family dynamics were fundamental in the construction of the plot. Lee, an admirer of the works of Shakespeare and Arthurian myths, incorporated these influences into the plot, giving it a classical tone. Corlett mentioned that references to works such as "Henry IV" and "King Lear" were crucial to the relationship between the characters Colin and Graham Lawson.

Real story?[]

With thrilling scenes, many may question whether there is a real narrative in the story. Well, the series is completely fictional, however, it was inspired by Anna Creek Station in northern South Australia, explains the Radio Times.

It is the largest working cattle station in the world, stretching over 15,746 square kilometers and housing 17,000 head of cattle.

Ben Davies revealed that the idea for the series came to him during a walk on the beach with executive producer Rob Gibson in the middle of the pandemic. They envisioned an action drama set on a cattle station in a setting little explored by film productions.

"It was a complete contrast, as we were surrounded by the Bondi crowds [in Sydney, Australia], people walking past us in their sportswear, wetsuits, carrying their surfboards, while Rob and I were making up stories about people in jeans, boots and flannel shirts in the Top End," he told Netflix.
