Personal life[]

Family[]

Spencer is the son of James and Margaret Dutton, two homesteaders making a living in Montana after they left a life of poverty behind in Tennessee to look for a better future. Spencer and his siblings are at the basis of a long family line. For generations his family fought to expand and protect the land they made on their own.

Spencer had a deceased older sister named Elsa who died in either 1883 or 1884, and an older brother named John. His aunt Claire (the sister of his father), her husband Henry and their daughter Mary Abel all died before he was born. His brother John later worked for their uncle Jacob Dutton and aunt Cara. John married Emma and had a son named Jack Dutton.

Love life[]

While he was in Kenya, Spencer met Alexandra, who was visiting the country with her fiancé Arthur. Shortly after meeting Spencer she lost interest in her fiancé and left him behind to run away with Spencer as soon as he took off. [4]

Engagement[]

The attraction between Spencer and Alexandra was mutual and when the two went on a short trip away from their new base camp Spencer proposed to her. Partly because the vastness and ancientness of the land made her realize how relatively short a human life is, she didn't take long to answer and agreed to marry him. [5]

Military service[]

World War I[]

He was a sergeant of the United States Army and witnessed the horrors of World War I.

Work[]

Hunting days[]

After his time in the military, Spencer went to Africa, where he worked for the Protectorate of Kenya as a hunter, killing man-eaters that prey upon humans mostly near railways construction areas.

Yellowstone Dutton Ranch[]

Spencer grew up on the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch where he learned about the ranch life from his father and uncle. Later in life, when he had left the ranch, he was asked to come back and help out his family when his brother died. [5]

  1. Spencer's age is disputed. He himself has stated that he was five when the man-eaters of Tsavo were killed. The Tsavo Maneaters were killed in 1898 and since his birthdate is unknown this would mean he was born in 1892 or 1893. Meanwhile, he appeared in two Yellowstone flashbacks that went back to 1893 and there he was shown as a young kid already able to ride a horse, which would make it more likely he was born in the late 1880's.

  3. Spencer and Alexandra's son is named John, after Spencer's older brother. It seems plausible this is John Dutton II, who showed old age when he was out for a ride with his son early in the twenty-first century (as seen in the tenth and final episode of Yellowstone's second season, Sins of the Father). This would, however, make Tate Dutton a sixth-generation Dutton, when it comes to the family that settled in the Yellowstone vicinity, and therefore it is debatable if Spotted Eagle's seven-generation prediction was honored in the storyline the Yellowstone universe follows (see 1883 tenth and final episode This Is Not Your Heaven).
