Margaret Dutton is a 1883 and Yellowstone character, played by Faith Hill. She and her husband James are homesteaders seeking a new life in Montana following the horrors of the Civil War.

Margaret and her husband James were farmers in Tennessee. When they set off for their journey northward they had two children: Elsa and John. John married Emma and is the father of Jack Dutton, who went on to become the father of John Dutton II, whose son, John Dutton III runs the ranch in the early twenty-first century.
Margaret also had a sister-in-law, Claire, and a niece, Mary Abel, Claire's daughter. Both of them were about to take the journey norhtward with Margaret and her family but Mary Abel was killed by rebelling men that visited their camp and Claire killed herself after the incident. [2] Her husband, Henry, had recently died as well. [3]
After they left their Tennessee home behind James and Margaret had another son, named Spencer.
John, Margaret's oldest son worked with Jacob Dutton when he got older. Jacob, James's brother, is married to Cara.
Death[]
After the passing of Margaret's husband James, in 1893, his brother Jacob came to help out the family he had left behind. When he arrived, a year later, he found Margaret frozen in a snow drift. The two orphaned sons she left behind were half starved an barely able to speak when Jacob took them in as his own sons and fulfilled his brother's dreams by starting a cattle empire. [4]
