John Dutton is the son of James and Margaret Dutton of the Dutton family that appears in Yellowstone and its prequels 1883 and 1923. He is one of at least three John's in the family (the others being John Dutton Sr. and John Dutton). He is played by Jack Michael Doke in Yellowstone, but Audie Rick appears as an even younger version of the character in 1883. In 1923, where he is one of the main characters, he is played by James Badge Dale.

John is the son of James and Margaret Dutton, two former Tennessee farmers who set off on a journey northward to make a better living in Montana. John and his siblings are at the basis of a long family line. For generations his family fights to expand and/or protect the land they made their own.
John has an older sister named Elsa and a younger brother named Spencer. He also knew his aunt, Claire, his father’s sister, and his cousin, Mary Abel, Claire's daughter. Both of them were about to take the journey northward with John and his family but Mary Abel was killed by rebelling men that visited their camp and his aunt killed herself after the incident. [2] Her husband, Henry, had recently died as well. [3]
Later in life he worked for Jacob Dutton, his uncle and the brother of his father. He also came to know his aunt Cara, Jacob's wife, very well.
Marriage[]
John married Emma and they had a son named Jack. Another child, born some time after Jack's birth, died at a young age, which made Jack their only child. [4]
Death[]
When in conflict with sheepers living near their ranch, the Dutton family was ambushed when they were on their way back from town. Banner Creighton, one of their rivals's leaders, personally saw to it Jacob and John were shot several times. John died immediately due to the impact of several bullets that hit him. [5]

John partly grew up on the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch where he learned about the ranch life from his father and uncle. Later in life he helped his uncle run the ranch.
