Grass on the Streets and Weeds on the Rooftops is the tenth and final episode of the fourth season of Yellowstone. It first aired on January 2, 2022.

Plot summary[]

Beth, still reeling from a heated confrontation with her father, begins packing her belongings, intending to leave the Yellowstone ranch. However, Rip intercepts her, gently reminding her of the promises they've made to each other and the potential consequences of her departure. Eventually, Beth relents and extends a heartfelt apology to her father, pledging to abide by his rules.

As she walks towards the barn, Carter unexpectedly calls Beth "Momma", which takes her surprise. She tells him to never call her that again.

Beth's behaviour takes an enigmatic turn as she starts asking unsettling questions to Walker about sneaking a weapon into prison, leaving Rip concerned. He offers his assistance, but Beth remains cryptic about her intentions.

Meanwhile, Kayce embarks on a spiritual journey. While waiting for his vision quest, he's immersed in haunting visions of his past.

In the bunkhouse, the wranglers are sitting around playing card games when Jimmy walks in dressed in his new Texan attire. Just as they invite him to sit down and join the game, his return takes an unexpected twist when he introduces Emily as his fiancée to the crew. This revelation sparks a brawl between Emily and Mia. Before the fight escalates further, Jimmy escorts Mia outside to have a conversation. He explains that, unlike Mia, Emily chose to move with him across the country. Mia then presents Jimmy with an ultimatum: to choose between herself and Emily. She leaves in tears as Jimmy makes it clear that he won't mention her name.

John, observing the conversation from the shadows, emerges and expresses his pride in Jimmy's maturity. He gives Jimmy his blessing to allow him to leave Yellowstone indefinitely with Emily, but reminding him that he "always has a place" at the Dutton ranch.

Kayce's visions progress, as he imagines having a conversations with his late brother Lee and a sexual encounter with Avery.

Out on the field, Jimmy impresses the wranglers with his new roping skills.

Tensions rise as Caroline, fuelled by fury over a newspaper article detailing Market Equities' airport plans, confronts Beth and expresses her determination to make Beth face the consequences of dragging the company into the ground. In a swift move, Caroline fires her. However, Beth appears unphased as she simply looks at the time and smiles as she says "gonna be late for my date".

Beth meets with Terrell Riggins to find out more information regarding the attacks on her and her family. He explains that he already that "the other guy" everything, eventually leading Beth to realise that he was referring to Jamie.

John finds himself in a challenging position when he attempts to plead Summer's case with Judge Davis, who remains unyielding.

As John, Carter, and Rip wait anxiously at the ranch for Beth's arrival, she appears with an unexpected request as she insists that they all join her outside for a crucial activity. Unbeknownst to them, Beth has brought a priest to the ranch and is determined to marry Rip before a life-changing event scheduled for the following day. Rip swiftly fetches his best man, Lloyd, from the bunkhouse, and in a heartfelt ceremony, Beth and Rip exchange their vows and become husband and wife.

Kayce, still in his hallucinations, sees the wolf in the distance and yells "What do you want from me?", and it disappears. He is then enveloped by visions of his past as a Navy SEAL, and breaks down. These nightmares and flashbacks cast a shadow over his marriage with Monica, leaving him to believe it may be ill-fated.

In court, despite Summer receiving a harsh prison sentence, John manages to negotiate a reduced term on appeal. The judge's perspective is rooted in his desire to preserve the world as they know it, fearing an uncertain future.

Beth goes to see Jamie in his office, and she reveals her knowledge of his secret meeting with Terrell Riggins. He then admits that Riggins was not the co-ordinator of the attacks, but Garrett, his biological father. Beth then presents Jamie with three choices for dealing with this conundrum: she tells John who will disown him, she tells Rip who will kill him or he kills Garrett.

Kayce begins imagining perplexing encounters with a Native American girl who claims a connection with him. He awakes to Mo sitting next to him who takes him home. Back at his house, these nightmares and flashbacks cast a shadow over his marriage with Monica, leaving him to believe it may be ill-fated.

Back at the ranch, Jimmy says his goodbyes to the wranglers who wish him luck for his new life in Texas. Rip reaffirms to Jimmy that he always has a place at the ranch. As he drives away, Mia watches on crying. Upon seeing the uncomfortable look on Jimmy's face, Emily asks him if he is having second thoughts, but he responds with "it is just guilt".

As Jamie arrives at his house, he spots Garrett in the field, packed and ready to leave. Jamie questions his departure, sparking a heartfelt conversation where Garrett expresses his pride in Jamie. In a poignant moment, they both say, 'I love you.' However, in an unexpected turn of events, Jamie then pulls out a gun and kills his father, breaking down. Upon transporting Garrett's lifeless body to the train station, he finds Beth waiting. She takes photos of the illegal act and declares ownership over him, sealing his fate.

In the midst of these dramatic events, John grapples with his complex feelings toward Jamie, ultimately acknowledging him as his son. As John sits by himself, Carter appears and asks if he would like to go for a ride, to which John replies he is having trouble seeing the point. Carter replies "There is no point. It's just fun!".

John laughs and responds "Well... I guess we'd better ride"

Together with Carter, John looks around at his land and they go for a ride around the pastures.
