Claire Dutton is a 1883 character, played by Dawn Olivieri. She is a fierce, practical and sharp widow that joins a wagon train to find a new home.

Claire was married to Henry, but became a widow when her husband died. Six of their children died at a young age but their daughter, Mary Abel, grew up to be in her teens. Claire and her daughter went on living with the Dutton family that later became owner of one of the biggest cattle ranches of the United States. Her brother James would be the founder of the ranch. He and his wife Margaret had children as well. Their oldest daughter is named Elsa and her brothers are named John and Spencer. When John got older he worked with Jacob Dutton, the brother of James and Claire, who is married to Cara.
Death[]
Right after they joined the wagon train to travel northward with her brother and his family, Claire and her daughter were in the main camp of the soon-to-be travellers. Some uninvited guests came to visit their camp. Claire made it clear to the intruders that they were not welcome but provoked them by doing so. The men pretended to leave but soon came back guns a-blazing. Mary Abel was shot and instantly died. No longer seeing any reason to live, Claire shot herself shortly after the incident. [1]
