Cara Dutton is a 1923 character played by Helen Mirren. She is the wife of Jacob Dutton, a rancher running the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch in the early twentieth century.

Cara is married to Jacob Dutton, the brother of James and Claire Dutton, who both set out on a northward journey in 1883, James with his wife Margaret, son John and daughter Elsa, Claire with her daughter Mary Abel. Claire, who was recently widowed after the passing of her husband Henry, and Mary Abel died before they were well on their way and Elsa passed away when the rest of the family arrived at their final destination. James and Margaret later had another son, Spencer.
